Division of Genebank Management, a growth and development road through 20 years embedded/portrayed in ex-situ conservation at Vietnam national plant genebank

     Over 20 years, Division of Genebank Management under Plant Resources Center (PRC) was greatly grown and developed in both of organizational, personal and professional, scientific works. Currently, the Division have 19 official cadres, specified 01 Doctor, Ph.D, 11 master, 06 engineers/bachelors and 01 technician, including a head and a vice head of Division/led by a head and a vice head of Division. The Division‘s responsibility is management and operation in seed genebank and field genebank. Beginning from Division of Plant genetic germplasm under Vietnam Agricultural Science Institute (VASI) with more 1,000 accessions of local rice varieties. Until now, there are more than 25,000 accessions of more than 133 crop species in seed genebank for Orthodox seed and about 3,000 accessions of 19 propagated crops species in field genebank for none Orthodox seed under Division of Genebank Management. Crop /Plant genetic resources provided crucial/basic needs for human living and society as well as contribute greatly to biological diversity. Then, knowledge, experience, skill and practices of these genetic resources in term of scientific and indigenous knowledge is so important to operation/management interventions. The Division is focusing on key activities 1. Collecting and Surveying; 2.Maintaining; 3. Describing and Evaluating; 4. Documenting; 5. Consulting and Distributing; 6. Exploiting. Besides, missions is assigned, the mass and leading of Division built cooperation to local/national and regional/international partners (SEARCA, USDA, CIRAD, CIAT, IRD, CIP, BIs) as well submitted publications in international journal/papers (breeding plant, spingers, UNESCO,). In future, the Division will strengthen facility, capacity building, and connection of national and international scientific and technological activities for meeting material, cultural and spiritual demands in changing national and international situation and increasingly demands.
