Results on reselection of specialized fruit vegetable varieties: Wax Long gourd and Green bitter gourd of Nghe An province

Wax Long Gourd (Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn) and Green bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) are two local varieties of Nghe An province with high yield, thick flesh and pest and disease good tolerance. However, the seed production is not paid attention so that the yield and quality of seed decreased.  To maintain the local genetic resources of specific fruit vegetables and develop to the production, the study on reselecting and developing specialized vegetable varieties as: Nghe An Green bitter gourd and Wax Long gourd  with high yield, good quality and improve farmer’s income was conducted. The combine single and population selection method was used for reselection in 2011-2013.  Study results showed: two reselected vegetable varieties have been obtained at the selection rate from 37.9-76.0% and 38.5-85.5% respectively. The commercial fruit yield of  Wax Long gourd variety is 50-55 ton/ha with good quality. It is higher than original and mass production yield 10% and 10-20% respectively. The Green bitter gourd variety has bigger fruit and fruit yield obtains 49.0-52.0 ton/ha, higher in comparison to the original and mass production variety at 5% and 20%, respectively.
