Evaluation of mungbean yellow mosaic disease on mungbean germplasm collection

Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek.) is a traditional legume food crop which is consumed in several different ways in Vietnam. One of the most serious threats to mungbean cultivation, particularly in the arid central and southern parts of Vietnam, is mungbean yellow mosaic disease (MYMD). In order to identify sources of resistance against mungbean yellow mosaic disease, 50 accessions of mungbean were evaluated under field conditions in two provinces Binh Dinh and Phu Yen. Out of the 50 mungbean accessions screened, three were found to be highly resistant (HR), one was resistant (R), 10 were moderately resistant (MR) and 36 accessions were found to be susceptible (S) to highly susceptible (HS) to the disease. This is the first time in Vietnam the resistant mungbean cultivars to MYMD has been reported. The identification of sources of resistance against virus strains of the disease is very important for the future development of mungbean in Vietnam.
