KS4 Taro

1. ORIGIN
Developed by the Plant Resources Center from the local variety Lui Bac Ninh. Currently conserved in the National Crop Genebank.2. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS
– Tout and high stem with 45 – 60 cm in length
– Pseudostem with purplish foot. Thick leaves. Few suckers
– Small mother corm; many daughter corms with ovate shape, thin skin, aromatic and tasty starchy flesh.
– Growth duration: Summer and autumn-winter crop season: 100 – 110 days. Spring crop season: 110 – 120 days
– Susceptible to phytophtora and red spider

3. CULTIVATION AND USE
– Planting time: all the year round in the North (except in the mountains). Three main seasons:
+ Spring: planting in February – March, harvest in May – June
+ Summer: planting in May-June, harvest in September – October
+ Autumn-winter: Planting in August – September, harvest in November – December
Corms are used as a tuber vegetable, or for cooking some desserts.
